When placing nest box in tree fork, it is important to place the box with the exit hole facing towards the tree. so that the possum can exit the box quickly onto a branch and into the canopy. Placing nest box in trees facing out into the open encourages easy predation by owls.
Drey's are a nest made by possums, you can easily make a false nest/drey made from two coconut fibre lined hanging baskets joined together with cable ties. These are useful when habitat has been lost and a quick home needs to be placed in areas to accommodate displaced possums. It is an offense to knowingly cut down a tree with animals inside. Hanging baskets can be purchased from Kmart for approx $2 each, the glue used for the manufacture of the coconut fibre is non toxic PVA so there is nothing harmful to the animals. You can make the drey extra waterproof by hanging it in dense tree canopies and by weaving natural foliage from the area,this will provide a bit more camouflage also. DO NOT CHANGE SIZE OF OPENING - this will allow birds and predators to enter and render it useless.
